Welcome to Tromsø, 350 km above the Arctic Circle! This beautiful and dynamic city is the perfect starting point for your Arctic travels: there are so many things to do! This is also where two magical natural phenomena occur: the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.
Tromsø - the Arctic Capital
Tromsø is known as the Arctic Capital due to its size, rich history and location. Tromsø is indeed the biggest city in Northern Norway and the third largest city north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world! Getting to Tromsø is easy thanks to its international airport (located 15 minutes from the city centre) and its port welcoming the Hurtigruten.
It’s also easy to travel from Tromsø to other destinations in Northern Norway like Lofoten, Senja, the Lyngenfjord region or North Cape. Even though Tromsø lies just below 70° north, it’s not as cold as you may think! The average temperature in winter is between 1°C and -3°C, making it even more enjoyable!

Owing to its geographical position above the Arctic Circle and inside the aurora oval, Tromsø is one of the best places in Norway and the world to see the aurora borealis. To increase your chances of seeing this natural phenomenon, you can chase the Northern Lights on a guided tour. The best time to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø is from September to early April.
Travelling to Tromsø in summer can be just as magical since it’s Midnight Sun season from mid-May to late July. As the sun never sets below the horizon, there is light 24/7! You will be mesmerized by the unique golden colours, especially around 1am when the sun is at its lowest skimming the surface of the sea.

SUMMER 2023: Go on a whale watching tour in Andenes
Go on a whale watching by Rigid Inflatable Boat in Andenes, and observe fin whales, sperm whales, and orcas.
A 2-day experience trip including scenic bus transport along Norway’s National Scenic Route on the island of Senja and two ferry crossings between Kvaløya, Senja and Andøya, to the village of Andenes.
Daily departures by bus, from Tromsø, between the 15th of June and the 14th of August.
If you are coming from Tromsø to join this tour, you will need an overnight to join a Whale Watching tour at Andenes.

Go for a wonderful day along the Norwegian coast, hopping from island to island until you reach the stunning island of Senja.
After 1,5 hour’s drive from Tromsø, you hop on a local ferry crossing over to Senja, where the unique nature will dazzle you. Along the way, there will be photo stops at lakes and beaches, including a local lunch at an old fishing resort on the west coast of Senja.
At 20:15 you will be back in Tromsø, on time for a cosy evening in the city after this back-to-nature adventure.

The summer season is the time to enjoy being on the water: you can go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or join a fjord cruise around Tromsø.
