Tromsø, the gateway to your Arctic adventures

Tromsø

Welcome to Tromsø, 350 km above the Arctic Circle! This beautiful and dynamic city is the perfect starting point for your Arctic travels: there are so many things to do! This is also where two magical natural phenomena occur: the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun.

Tromsø, the Arctic Capital

Tromsø is known as the Arctic Capital due to its size, rich history and location. Tromsø is indeed the biggest city in Northern Norway and the third largest city north of the Arctic Circle anywhere in the world! Getting to Tromsø is easy thanks to its international airport (located 15 minutes from the city centre) and its port welcoming the Hurtigruten. It’s also easy to travel from Tromsø to other destinations in Northern Norway like Lofoten, Senja, the Lyngenfjord region or North Cape. Even though Tromsø lies just below 70° north, it’s not as cold as you may think! The average temperature in winter is between 1°C and -3°C, making it even more enjoyable!

Tromsø, the Land of the Northern Lights and Midnight Sun

Owing to its geographical position above the Arctic Circle and inside the aurora oval, Tromsø is one of the best places in Norway and the world to see the aurora borealis. To increase your chances of seeing this natural phenomenon, you can chase the Northern Lights on a guided tour. The best time to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø is from September to early April.

Travelling to Tromsø in summer can be just as magical since it’s Midnight Sun season from mid-May to late July. As the sun never sets below the horizon, there is light 24/7! You will be mesmerized by the unique golden colours, especially around 1am when the sun is at its lowest skimming the surface of the sea.

Tromsø, a year-round adventure destination

Tromsø is a lovely city nestled among beautiful mountains, fjords and islands. There are endless activities to do in the wonderful Arctic nature easily accessible from the city. In winter, popular tours include dog sledding, snowmobiling, whale watching, reindeer feeding and sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing – all tours including return transportation from Tromsø city centre. The summer season is the time to enjoy being on the water: you can go kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or join a fjord cruise around Tromsø. If you are wondering how many days you should stay in Tromsø, there is so much to do that you can easily stay at least five days! You will find good accommodation (hotels, holiday homes, apartments…) in or close to the city centre.

Tromsø, a lively city full of culture and Arctic cuisine

You will also love Tromsø’s foodie and cultural scene. The charming city centre has a lot of tasty restaurants and cafes serving traditional Norwegian food. Are you wondering what to eat? Why not try cod, reindeer stew or even a whale steak!

In Tromsø, you will find interesting museums, cool art galleries and cultural events all year round like the Tromsø International Film Festival (January), the Bukta Tromsø Open Air Festival (July) and Rakettnatt Music and Arts Festival (August). If you like music, don’t forget to attend a Midnight Sun concert at the Arctic Cathedral, the city’s landmark.

With more than 17 years of experience in the tourism industry, we aim to inspire and offer you the best arctic experience ever: from winter to summer, all year round, single activities, accommodation, packages, cross-border transportation, and unforgettable experiences.
