How to get to Narvik?
Narvik is a hub in Northern Norway and is easily accessible by plane (Evenes Airport), bus, car or train.
From Tromsø:
If you are in Tromsø and wish to travel to Narvik (or the other way around) during the winter time (December to March), we recommend you take the Arctic Route, as we have a daily bus route between these two locations, with several stops along the way.
Other ways:
Taking the train from Narvik to Kiruna (Swedish Lapland) on the Ofoten Line will be a highlight of any trip in the Arctic as this 42 km route is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in Europe.
This trip takes you through a wild and dramatic landscape from fjord to the alpine mountains found in the Abisko National Park. The Ofoten railway line, built at the end of the 19th century, is historical as it was originally used to transport iron ore from Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik.
During the Second World War (WWII), the Nazis sought to gain control of the railway so they could export the precious iron to use in the weapons industry. Owing to its strategic location, Narvik was targeted during the first large battle of WWII: the Narvik Campaign (1940). Along your way, you will see remnants of the Battle of Narvik. You can also learn more about this chapter of history at the Narvik War Museum.
The Arctic Route also offers winter connections to Narvik. There is a bus from Narvik to Tromsø as well as from Levi to Svolvær via Narvik, enabling you to go from the ski resorts of Finland to the magnificent Lofoten Islands.
