Tromsø is known around the world as the Gateway to the Arctic: a city surrounded by mountains, fjords, and endless natural wonders. In July, a brand-new attraction opened on the mainland side of Tromsø that takes this Arctic magic indoors: the Tromsø Snow Dome.
Located at Jadevegen 129 in Krokelvdalen, at the Tromsø Alpin Ski Center, Tromsø Snow Dome is a one-of-a-kind experience where everything is made entirely out of snow and ice. With spectacular ice carvings, beautiful light installations, and carefully designed rooms, it is both an art exhibition and an immersive cultural journey.
Step into a frozen world
The Tromsø Snow Dome is made up of four unique rooms, each crafted from snow and ice. Every room tells a story about Northern Norway’s history, nature, and traditions, allowing guests to travel through time and culture while surrounded by frozen beauty.
- The Norse mythology room
Visitors begin their journey in a world of gods and legends. Here, the theme of Ragnarok (the great battle that symbolizes both the end and a new beginning) is brought to life through powerful ice sculptures. This room captures the dramatic spirit of old Norse myths, where stories of giants, gods, and destiny are carved into walls of ice. - Polar history room
Tromsø has long been a starting point for Arctic explorers, hunters, and scientists. In this room, guests will see stunning ice art inspired by the great expeditions that began here. Sculptures celebrate brave pioneers who set out into the unknown, showing Tromsø’s role as the true “Gateway to the Arctic.” - Life in the Arctic room
What was it like to live in Northern Norway hundreds of years ago? This room shows the daily life of people who survived through fishing, hunting, and reindeer herding in a harsh environment. Intricate carvings tell the story of resilience and survival in the far North. - Sámi art & Northern Lights room
The final room is a breathtaking combination of ice, color, and sound. Here, traditional Sámi art is paired with spectacular light projections that mimic the dancing Aurora Borealis. Immersive soundscapes create the feeling of standing under the northern lights themselves. This room is a true highlight, offering both peace and enchantment.
Beyond the ice
After exploring the Snow Dome, guests can warm up at Parken Lavvo, a traditional Sámi tentipi next to the attraction. Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with soft lighting, crackling fires, and comfortable seating. Visitors can enjoy food and drinks made with ingredients from local producers, with a focus on authentic Arctic flavors.
Every ticket includes one free coffee or hot chocolate at the café, the perfect way to end a snowy adventure while admiring the views from the glass windows.
A year-round Arctic experience
The Tromsø Snow Dome is not just a winter attraction. Thanks to modern technology, it is kept frozen and beautiful all year round. Whether you visit in the endless daylight of summer or the deep darkness of winter, the experience is just as magical.
It is an excellent choice for individual travelers, families, groups, tour operators, or event organizers. The combination of art, culture, and atmosphere makes it a memorable stop for anyone visiting Tromsø.
