Dog sledding tours in Tromsø, Norway – Ready, set, go!

1 February 2022

Besides being an exciting, thrilling and unforgettable activity, it is one of the best ways to experience the Arctic winter landscape!

The tour starts with a pick-up at Prostneset Bus Terminal (in the city center) at 08:45 am or 11:45 am, with approximately one-hour transfer to the husky camp. Once there, you dress warm in a winter suit, winter shoes and mittens, and then you are ready to meet the dogs!

How difficult is it to self-drive a husky sledge?

Although you require basic physical fitness, you do not need prior experience in dog sledding. The guides will explain to you all you need to know about how to mush (drive) the sledge. Each sledge will have a team of two, a driver and a passenger. You will be given the option to change positions several times so that you can try both experiences.

The one sitting on the sledge will have the possibility to take photos, film and admire the scenery, whereas the one driving will have to steer a bit and help the dogs by pushing the sledge when facing uphill. You will also always have a guide on a sledge close to you, ready to help you when you need it!

The dog sledding is done with groups of between 4 to 6 dogs per sledge, with usually female dogs leading the group (they are calmer and more experienced), whereas the other dogs follow the lead.  The duration of the dog sledding is around one to one hour and a half.

Check more information here for the morning tour (8:45 am) or here for the afternoon tour (11:45). You can also check the trailer of this tour below, so you can have an idea about what’s waiting for you:

What is included?

  • Transport from and back to Tromsø;
  • Warm clothes and equipment, so you don’t feel cold (warm winter suit, winter shoes and mittens);
  • A warm soup;
  • Hot drinks (coffee, water and tea).

What about the dogs?

If you are in doubt regarding the well-being of the dogs, your concerns will go away when you first meet the huskies and see how enthusiastic and happy they are and how well they are treated. These dogs love running!

Please notice that you must be at least 12 years old to drive a husky sledge. Want to know more about this tour? Check out all our dog sledding tours!
