The beauty of Tromsø and why it’s the perfect destination for a Dog Sledding adventure

Tromsø, known as the “Gateway to the Arctic,” is a place of unparalleled natural beauty. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains, fjords, and vast expanses of untouched wilderness, it provides the ideal backdrop for a dog sledding adventure. The crisp, clean air, and untouched snow in the middle of nowhere, add to the allure of this enchanting destination.

Embarking on a dog sledding tour in Tromsø allows you to witness the breathtaking scenery up close and personal. The rhythmic sound of the sled gliding across the snow, accompanied by the excited barks of the huskies, creates a symphony that will stay with you long after the tour ends.

Choosing the best Dog Sledding tour in Tromsø

When it comes to choosing a dog sledding tour in Tromsø, it’s essential to be sure to select a reputable and responsible operator that prioritizes the well-being of their dogs. A strong commitment to animal welfare and following ethical practices should be something to consider. Reading reviews and testimonials from previous participants can give you valuable insights into the quality of the tours offered.

Consider if you will have time to interact with the dogs, and ask questions, and if the company provides all the necessary equipment, such as warm clothing and safety gear, to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the tour. Check if there is a meal included, as you will probably be tired and hungry after the tour.

The location is also something else to consider. Dog sledding tours don’t happen in the city center of Tromsø (or anywhere on the island of Tromsø), you will have to be transported to the dog camp. The duration of the trip varies depending on where the dog camp is located.

Best Arctic offers many options, with several dog camps located in different spots around Tromsø (the experience is the same, it only changes the dog camp location and the views/ landscapes):

Tamokdalen: Located roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes away by bus from Tromsø (each way), Tamokdalen offers you scenic surroundings, mighty mountains, and deep valleys. We have a morning tour leaving Tromsø at 08:45 am (Husky Safari Tamokdalen Morning tour) and an afternoon tour, leaving Tromsø at 11:45 am (Husky Safari Tamokdalen Afternoon tour) – a perfect option if you have a northern light tour the evening before, as then you can rest a bit longer in the morning.

Breivikeidet: Breivikeidet is located only 45-minute drive from Tromsø, with views of the majestic Lyngen Alps. This tour also offers you a morning option (leaving Tromsø at 08:30, with our Tromsø Dog Sledding Morning tour) or a later departure, at 11:30 am, with our Tromsø Dog Sledding Afternoon tour).

Skibotn: The beautiful Skibotn Valley is located inland, approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Tromsø. At this location and with transport from and back to Tromsø included, we offer you our Dog sledding in Arctic nature, from Tromsø with departure from Tromsø at 08:30 am, lasting for a total of 8.5 hours, our Dog sledding in Arctic nature (tour 2), also with meeting time at 08:45 am.

What to expect on a Dog Sledding tour in Tromsø

The tour starts with your check-in at the Hospitality Desk of Best Arctic, inside Radisson Blu Hotel, in Tromsø. There, our team will give you instructions about where to go and what to expect. You will then move on to the bus/minivan towards the selected tour you booked.

On arrival, you’ll be greeted by experienced guides who, after you get dressed up in warm winter suits, boots, mittens and so on, will introduce you to your team of sled dogs. These furry companions are not only strong and agile but also incredibly friendly and eager to embark on the adventure with you.

After a brief safety orientation and learning the basics of mushing, you’ll take control of your sled and lead your team through the snowy trails. The sensation of driving a dog sled is like no other – the wind in your face, the sound of the sled gliding effortlessly, and the bond you’ll form with the huskies as they respond to your commands.

It’s a truly exhilarating experience that will leave you with a sense of accomplishment and a newfound respect for these incredible animals.

The best time to go Dog Sledding in Tromsø

For dog sledding activities to start, we need enough snow. The winter months, from December to March/ beginning of April, are the most popular for dog sledding due to the snowy landscapes. However, it is also possible to go on a dog sledding by carts tour.

This tour uses carts pulled by dogs during October and November before the snow arrives. However, if there is already enough snow during these months, we just exchange the carts for the sleds. It can also be a great time to go dog sledding in Tromsø.

Tips for preparing for a Dog Sledding tour

To make the most of your dog sledding adventure in Tromsø, it’s essential to come prepared. Here are some tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

Dress in layers: Tromsø’s weather can be unpredictable, so layering your clothing will allow you to adjust your comfort level as needed. Opt for moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer shell.

Wear appropriate footwear: Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction are essential to keep your feet warm and dry during the tour.

Protect your extremities: Don’t forget to wear gloves or mittens, a warm hat, and a neck gaiter, balaclava, or scarf to protect your hands, head, nose, and neck from the cold.

Stay hydrated and nourished: Dog sledding can be physically demanding, so ensure you bring water and high-energy snacks to keep yourself fueled throughout the tour.

Follow the guide’s instructions: Listen carefully to your guide’s instructions regarding sled control, braking, and interacting with the dogs. This will ensure the safety and well-being of both you and the huskies.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to fully enjoy your dog sledding adventure in Tromsø.
