The best part? You do not need a rental car. This direct bus route makes Sommarøy accessible for visitors who prefer a simple, reliable and more relaxed way to travel. You can sit back, look out the window and enjoy the changing scenery as the road passes through fjords, mountains, bridges, islands and open sea.

For many travelers, this is exactly what they come to Northern Norway for: that feeling of space, silence and raw natural beauty.

What can you experience on the way?

The bus journey from Tromsø to Sommarøy is a scenic route through some of the region’s most photogenic landscapes. Expect views of Arctic fjords, green summer mountains, coastal roads and small communities along the way. In summer, the light can be soft and golden for hours, especially during the Midnight Sun season when the sun never fully sets.

Instead of focusing on driving, directions or parking, passengers can simply enjoy the moment. Watch the mountains rise behind the sea. Notice the color of the water shift from deep blue to clear turquoise. Take photos through the window. Or simply relax and let the Arctic landscape unfold slowly.

What to do in Sommarøy

Sommarøy is often described as an Arctic island paradise. Its white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters can look almost tropical, although the surrounding mountains and cool northern air remind you that you are far above the Arctic Circle.

Once you arrive, you can explore Sommarøy at your own pace. Walk along the beaches, take photos of the colourful houses, enjoy the peaceful coastal atmosphere or stop for local food at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. On warm summer days, some visitors sunbathe or even take a refreshing dip in the sea.

If you enjoy active experiences, consider hiking up Nordkollen on Hillesøy for panoramic views over the islands, bridges, beaches and open ocean. Wildlife lovers may also spot seabirds or other Arctic wildlife around the coast.

Sommarøy is not a place to rush. It is a place to breathe, wander and feel close to nature.

A practical and comfortable route

The summer bus route is designed for easy travel. Onboard, passengers can expect comfortable seating, free Wi-Fi, space for luggage and English-speaking drivers. This is especially helpful for international visitors who want a straightforward travel experience in Northern Norway.

The route runs during the summer season, from June to August, with fixed departures that make it possible to plan a same-day return trip. Tickets are available online in advance, which is recommended during peak season to guarantee your seat. It is also possible to buy tickets onboard, subject to availability.

Current ticket prices are NOK 290 for adults, NOK 145 for children aged 4-15 (one-way), and free travel for infants aged 0-3.

Good to know before you travel

The Tromsø departure point is Tromsø Prostneset Bus Terminal, Platform 3, and the Sommarøy stop is by Sommarøy Arctic Hotel. Travelers should arrive at least 10 minutes before departure. The bus is red and marked with Bussring and/or Arctic Route branding, but the stops themselves are not marked with Arctic Route signs. It is a good idea to check your exact stop location before travelling.

This service is not a traditional hop-on hop-off bus. You need a ticket for each leg of your journey, whether travelling one way or returning to Tromsø the same day. Each passenger can bring one item of hand luggage and one larger item within the stated luggage limits. Sports gear such as bikes, surfboards and golf equipment are not allowed onboard.

Who is this route perfect for?

The Tromsø to Sommarøy summer bus is perfect for travelers who want a scenic Arctic day trip without the responsibility of driving. It is also a strong choice for visitors with limited time in Tromsø who still want to experience beaches, islands and coastal landscapes.

Families benefit from the simple logistics. Couples get a romantic and peaceful escape from the city. Photographers get endless inspiration. Solo travellers get a safe and easy way to explore beyond Tromsø.
