Do’s for the Arctic Route Summer Bus routes

Booking in advance

To ensure a smooth journey along the Arctic Route, it’s crucial to reserve your spot on the bus in advance. Even if you’re planning last-minute, you can book just before departure.

Dressing in layers

When traveling by bus in the Arctic, dressing appropriately is key to your comfort. The secret to staying warm is layering your clothing. Start with synthetic underwear or merino wool as a base layer, as these materials wick moisture away from your skin. Add fleece or wool garments as your middle layer for insulation. Top it off with a windproof outer layer to protect you from the elements. Remember, multiple thin layers are more effective than a couple of thick ones, allowing you to adjust your temperature easily throughout your journey.

You can read further information on what to wear and pack when traveling to Northern Norway, here.

Long bus rides through the stunning Arctic landscapes offer the perfect opportunity to relax and enjoy the scenery. To make the most of your trip:

For your safety and also for logistic purposes, please be on the bus when it leaves the ferry. We also recommend you to try the waffles on the ferries, they are a really Norwegian delight!

Don’ts for the Arctic Route Summer Bus routes

Forgetting camera equipment

When traveling on the Arctic Route, don’t overlook the importance of your camera gear. The breathtaking landscapes of Northern Norway, including the Lofoten Islands, offer countless photo opportunities. To capture these moments:

  • Bring extra SD cards – Arctic wildlife sightings can lead to thousands of photos in a single encounter;
  • Pack backup batteries – Cold temperatures drain batteries quickly, so keep spares in a warm pocket;
  • Include a cleaning kit – You never know when you’ll need to remove dust from your camera sensor.

Remember, you can charge your phone, camera, and laptop on the bus, but having a power bank adds an extra layer of security for your devices.

Ignoring safety instructions

Your safety is paramount when traveling by bus in the Arctic. Don’t disregard the following safety guidelines:

  • Arrive on time for departures – Buses operate on a strict schedule and can’t wait for passengers, so be punctual;
  • Wait outside for the bus – Don’t stay inside buildings, cafes, or shops while waiting;
  • Use a dry bag for your equipment – This protects your gear during boat transfers, possible whale watching tours, kayak tours or in wet conditions.

Overlooking local etiquette

Respecting local customs enhances your Arctic experience. Avoid these common etiquette mistakes:

  • Don’t bring pets – Dogs and other animals are not allowed on Arctic Route buses, with the exception of guide-dogs;
  • Don’t leave any trash out in the nature, always clean your space and use trash bags/ cans.

Mind the sand when stopping at the beach stops

Be sure to remove all the sand from your shoes/ clothes and belongings, before re-entering the bus, after the stop at the beach.

By being mindful of these don’ts, you’ll have a more enjoyable and respectful journey through the Arctic. Remember to download the Voice of Norway app for an interactive audio guide experience, enhancing your understanding of the region’s culture and landscapes as you travel.
