Lyngen Alps, the Arctic playground
Lyngen Alps, the Arctic playground
The Lyngen Alps are one of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes.
They are located east of Tromsø on a peninsula stretching about 90 km, with spectacular fjords on both sides.
Directly rising from the sea, these jagged mountains tower higher than 1,000 m. Jiehkkevarri (1,834 m) is the highest peak of the Lyngen Alps and the highest mountain in Troms og Finnmark County.
A nature paradise worth visiting in every season
In summer, the valleys and forests are lush and green, but let autumn come and they are tinged with russet red and gold, contrasting with the icy turquoise waters of the glacial lakes and rivers.
This is the perfect time to go hiking (for instance to the famous Blåvatnet, “the blue lake”), mountain biking, climb one of the many glaciers (with a guide!), or why not try dog sledding with carts?
Let the first snow arrive and the Lyngen Alps turn into a winter wonderland, perfect for skiing, ski touring, snowshoeing, and, if you are looking for an adrenaline rush, a snowmobile tour in Svensby (transport included from Tromsø)!
During winter, try a dog sledding tour at Breivikeidet: you can either go early in the morning (08:30 am with transportation included from Tromsø), with our Tromsø Dog Sledding – morning or a little bit later (11:30 am) with our Tromsø Dog Sledding – afternoon tour.
How to get there?
How to get there?
If you are in Tromsø, take the Arctic Route Tromsø – Lyngen – Tromsø, driving daily between the 1st of December and the 31st of March.
Another way is to drive to Breivikeidet and take the ferry from there to Svensby. The crossing takes about 20 minutes and will certainly add an extra dimension to your trip.
Go on a whale watching tour in Skjervøy
Skjervøy in the Lyngenfjord region has become the hotspot for whale watching in Norway.
That’s where the orcas and humpback whales have been migrating every winter for a few years to feed in the herring-rich fjords of the Arctic.
Generally, the best time for whale watching is from November to January. Whale watching safaris are organized with transportation from Tromsø.
You can go on a whale watching cruise or take a bus before jumping into a rigid inflatable boat.
Lyngenfjord, one of the best places to see the Northern Lights from Tromsø
Lyngenfjord is an ideal location to go Northern Lights chasing as the region enjoys a drier and more stable climate than other places around Tromsø. In fact, the Lyngen Alps are a barrier to the clouds, and clearer nights mean you have better chances of seeing the aurora borealis.
Try snowmobiling in Lyngen, with our Lyngen Snowmobile Safari, a daily tour that will show you beautiful photography scenarios.
You can add an extra adventure to your Northern Lights experience by joining a daily or evening snowmobile trip in Signaldalen, the valley home of the most photographed mountain in the region: Otertinden!
If you are looking for accommodation in the region, we recommend staying in an Aurora Hut for a wonderful night under the mesmerizing Northern Lights.
