Visiting Tromsø in winter (November – March)

Winter is the most popular season for visitors traveling to Tromsø. Snow-covered landscapes, Polar Night and a wide range of seasonal activities makes this one of the most distinctive times to experience Northern Norway.

Temperatures during winter typically range between -5°C and 5°C (23°F to 41°F), although colder periods can occur. This is also the best time to enjoy winter activities in Tromsø such as dog sledding, snowmobile tours, whale watching (November – January) and Northern Lights excursions.

Visiting Tromsø in spring (April–May)

Spring brings longer days, milder temperatures and a gradual transition between winter and summer. Snow often remains in the mountains, while lower elevations begin to experience changing conditions and increased daylight.

Temperatures generally range between 0°C and 10°C (32°F to 50°F). Spring can be a good choice for travelers looking for fewer crowds while still enjoying snowy scenery and outdoor activities.

Visiting Tromsø in summer (June–August)

Summer is defined by the Midnight Sun, when daylight extends throughout the night and outdoor activities can continue around the clock. The region’s landscapes become greener, hiking trails become more accessible and coastal excursions become increasingly popular.

Temperatures usually range between 10°C and 18°C (50°F to 64°F), though warmer days are possible. Summer is ideal for travelers interested in sightseeing, hiking, fjord cruises and experiencing life in the Arctic without snow.

Best for:

Visiting Tromsø in autumn (September–October)

Autumn is often overlooked but offers beautiful colours, cooler temperatures and the return of darker skies. As daylight hours shorten, opportunities to see the Northern Lights begin to return while hiking and sightseeing remain possible.

Temperatures typically range between 3°C and 12°C (37°F to 54°F). Autumn offers a balance between summer and winter conditions and can be a quieter time to visit the region.

Best time to see the northern lights in Tromsø

The Northern Lights season in Tromsø generally runs from September to early April, when dark skies provide suitable conditions for aurora viewing. While sightings depend on weather and solar activity, the months between October and March are often considered the most reliable period for Northern Lights travel.

Many visitors choose January, February and March because they combine good aurora opportunities with snow-covered landscapes and a full range of winter activities.
