Whale watching in Tromsø: month-by-month guide

28 October 2026

Planning a whale-watching trip to Tromsø? Choosing the right month is essential, as whales are only present in the region during a relatively short period each year. While Northern Norway offers incredible Arctic experiences throughout winter, the opportunity to see humpback whales and orcas depends on their seasonal migration.

So, when is the best time for whale watching in Tromsø? The main season generally runs from November to January, although whales can sometimes arrive in October.

Why do whales visit Tromsø in winter?

Every autumn, large schools of herring migrate into the fjords of Northern Norway, attracting hungry humpback whales and orcas. These marine mammals follow their food source, gathering in coastal waters where feeding opportunities are abundant.

In recent years, the waters around Skjervøy and Kvænangen, north of Tromsø, have become important whale-watching areas. Because the herring’s movements change from year to year, the exact location and timing of whale sightings can also vary.

This is why joining a guided whale-watching tour from Tromsø is a practical way to explore the areas where whales are currently being observed.

  • October: The beginning of whale season

Depending on when the herring arrives, humpback whales and orcas may begin appearing during October. However, the start of the season is unpredictable. Some years, tours begin earlier than expected, while in others, visitors must wait until November.

October offers more daylight than the following winter months, making it attractive for wildlife photography. Check our latest tour availability before planning your trip around whale watching.

  • November: One of the best months for whale watching

November is generally one of the best months to see whales near Tromsø. As herring gather in the fjords, humpback whales and orcas arrive to feed, creating opportunities to observe their natural behavior.

Early November still offers several hours of daylight, while the end of the month marks the beginning of the polar night.

Our whale-watching excursions allow you to explore Northern Norway’s coastal landscapes while searching for these magnificent animals.

  • December: Whale watching during the polar night

December is another excellent month for whale watching in Tromsø, even though the sun remains below the horizon. The polar night does not mean complete darkness throughout the day. Around midday, beautiful blue and pink twilight often provides enough natural light to observe whales.

December is particularly appealing for travelers who want to combine whale watching with Northern Lights tours and other winter activities. Discover more in our article about daylight for whale watching in Tromsø in December.

  • January: The final weeks of the main season

January is traditionally part of the main whale-watching season, particularly during its earlier weeks. However, as herring begins leaving the area, the whales eventually follow. This means sightings can become less predictable toward the end of the month.

If whale watching is your main reason for visiting, we recommend checking tour availability and booking your excursion early in your stay.

  • February: Usually too late for whale watching

By February, the main whale-watching season around Tromsø has usually ended. Most humpback whales and orcas have followed the herring away from their winter feeding grounds.

Occasional sightings may still occur, but travelers should not plan a February vacation expecting regular whale-watching departures. Instead, consider a fjord sightseeing cruise to discover Northern Norway’s dramatic coastline and Arctic scenery.

  • March to September: Outside the main Tromsø whale season

From March through September, whale watching is generally not available from Tromsø. During these months, the humpback whales and orcas that gather in Northern Norway during winter have usually moved away from their seasonal feeding areas, following their food sources.

However, this does not mean that whale watching is impossible elsewhere in Norway. If you are visiting during summer, destinations such as Andenes in the Vesterålen region offer opportunities to observe different whale species.

If you are staying in Tromsø during these months, you can still enjoy the Arctic coastline through our fjord cruises, which offer opportunities to discover the region’s landscapes and marine environment.

Which whales can you see in Tromsø?

The two species most associated with winter whale watching in Tromsø are humpback whales and orcas, also known as killer whales.

Humpback whales are recognizable by their long pectoral fins and impressive size. You may observe them surfacing, diving or displaying their distinctive tail flukes.

Orcas often travel in family groups and can sometimes be seen hunting herring together. Their black-and-white coloring and tall dorsal fins make them easy to recognize.

Other marine wildlife may also appear during excursions, although encounters depend entirely on natural conditions.
